Recent Annual Reports and Client Surveys

2023

Electronic surveys were sent in December 2023 to clients (commercial, home grower, and service professional clientele) who included an email address on their diagnostic form to evaluate the outcomes of the PDC diagnostic services. Response rates from the three surveys were 26%, 17%, and 26%, respectively.

Some highlights of the survey results were: Commercial (100%), home grower (90%), and service professional (100%) respondents agreed with the statement, "I value the services provided by the Plant Disease Clinic."

Commercial respondents agreed that PDC services increased crop quality (94%) and profitability (57%) and allowed them to develop a more strategic integrated pest management approach in their operation (88%).

Commercial, home grower, and service professional respondents agreed that PDC services increase their knowledge of pest and disease problems (88%, 86%, 75%), abiotic problems [e.g., improper pH, chemical injury, environmental stress] (88%, 59%, 75%), and alternative disease control tactics [those other than pesticides] (71%, 72%, 63%).

Commercial, home grower and service professional respondents also agreed that the PDC services ensure accurate diagnosis (100%, 90%, 100%), ensure they use appropriate pesticides (88%, 57%, 50%), use pesticides only when they will be effective (82%, 61%, 50%), and reduce the amount of pesticide they use (47%, 42%, 50%). Service professionals agreed that the PDC services increase 1) the quality of their services (100%) and 2) their client's perception of the quality of their services (88%). We served commercial growers whose operation values ranged from <$2500 (1), 2.5K-4.9K (5), 10k-24.9 (2), and 50K-99K (7), and their operation acreage size ranged from <1 acre (5), 1-9 (5), 10-49 (1), 50-179 (1), 180-499 (4), 500-999 (1). We served plant service professionals whose operation values ranged from <$2500 (1), 25K-49K (1), and 50K-99K (4).

These survey responses indicate that the use of PDC services reaches a wide variety of clients, various operation sizes, and operation dollar values. Clients seek PDC services to ensure accurate and timely plant disease diagnoses, which are crucial for successful disease and pest prevention and management strategies, and to address environmental and cultural plant problems, hence both minimizing the use and ensuring the effective use of pesticides while increasing agricultural and environmental sustainability.
